Collecting LEGO Star Wars Playsets is no easy task, and since the debut of the range in 1999 there have been made available a staggering number of spin off toys for the enthusiast. With six films and an animated spin-off in the form of the The Clone Wars to cover, you can be sure that getting hold of each ship, character and location will be a mammoth task.

LEGO Star Wars was the first officially licensed movie product produced by the Danish toy company, who have since found similar success with popular film franchises like Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Spiderman, Batman and Lucasarts’ other major money-maker, Indiana Jones. The ever-popular Star Wars remains the big hitter, though, with everything from household names like the Millenium Falcon to the more obscure A-Wings and B-Wings to be found in brick form.

As is the tradition with LEGO, the Star Wars sets allow you to build the Star Wars universe in your own image, not just recreating the famous scenes but remodelling and interacting with them. They tap into our natural instinct to craft strong narratives and allow the imagination to really take flight.

Collectors who have a fascination for completeness would do worse than to check ebay for the myriad attic clearouts which often provide excellent finds. You’ll also find online stores selling complete, unopened sets, often in mint condition. Particularly highly prized are the 1999 Original trilogy sets, which have been replaced with newer versions and been discontinued.

The classic Millenium Falcon, Slave I and X-Wing sets, for example, will inevitably fetch a higher price, while the original mini figures, such as Boba Fett, Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker have been replaced by newer models and as such are considered major rarities.

If you’re really into LEGO Star Wars, you might also want to consider checking out the videogame series, critically acclaimed and a major seller on Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft and PC platforms. Combining the customisable and cutesy nature of the LEGO universe with co-operative arcade action for a fun pick up and play blast, the collector might want to consider investing in the Nintendo Gamecube version of the game, one of the last titles released on that platform and guaranteed to become a rarity too.

Collecting Star Wars Playsets can be a joy for Jedis young and old. With such a breadth of sets on offer you really can let your imagination go wild. Keep an eye out for rarities and get the full range for the complete Star Wars experience.
